Attention & Aging

Did you know:

Attention is the precursor to remembering information! If we are not paying attention, how are we going to remember relevant information? Attention can be thought of as a fluctuating skill depending on many different factors present.

Some factors that may influence our attention include:

  • Alcohol

  • Sleep

  • Pain

  • Time of day

  • Stress

  • Hearing/vision loss

  • Interest

We may feel the factors above impact us more as we age and affect our ability to focus. As we get older, we may find it harder to divide our attention among two or more activities or sources of information. Additionally, we may find we get more easily distracted than when we were young!

It is important to be aware of what influences our attention in everyday situations as well as what we can do to keep this area sharp.

To learn more on this topic, join Leanne, our Occupational Therapist, for a talk hosted by the Burlington Public Library at Tansley Woods on

Tuesday, August 24th from 2-3pm.
